Distributor

After further testing I think my points are bad. I tried picking up a set but they’re not in stock at my local stores. I order a new point & condenser set from Moss which I’m hoping will come in before the weekend so I can hopefully get her running this weekend. Once she’s running I can wash and wax her and then proudly show her off again.

Finally

Ok, I pulled the carbs again and checked everything in them. No more fuel leak, plus I realized I’ve had a massive vacuum leak the this entire time. I plugged the leak and I’m still not able to start her. I think the plug wires are still hooked up wrong and I really think my battery needs a good charge after not being driven and all my attempts to start her up. I’m going to hopefully figure out TDC later today and with any luck she’ll start.

Woe is Me

Yeah, still leaking intermittently so I'm pulling the carbs this weekend and giving both of them the once over. Also gave up and went to work on my Grand Prix since I know what's wrong with that and can fix it. Hopefully I'll get the B running this weekend. The only thing that's going to screw me is where the wires go on the distributor, I also forget.

Attempt #1

So, got the oil in, coolant in, alright, trying to start it....What? Gas leak? *cry* Carbs have to come off again.

Looks fuel is leaking from the bottom plate of the front carb, almost like it isn't sealed, had to pull the carbs to re-seat the plates. After I got them back on tried again...yeah...another leak. Rear carb is pouring gas out of the overflow tube so I need to adjust the floats.

I'm tired and my garage smells like I've been huffing fuel for the past hour so I'm gunna pull them again tomorrow and hopefully fix it. Then all I have to do is figure out how much I messed up the distributor setup.

Oil & Coolant

Alright, for all of you that have changed your oil and waited 2 months to replace it, here's one you'll like.

What's the #1 thing you need to make sure you've put back on before adding oil?

          Give up? The Oil Plug.

What's the #2 thing you need to make sure you've done before adding oil?

          Tightened the valve cover down

I was putting oil back in the engine after removing everything for cleaning and repainting the engine. Apparently I forgot a few steps and ended up pouring in 3 bottles of VR-1 before noticing the oil leak. Thankfully the oil was still chilled a bit and the block was empty of oil, so only about 1/3 of a quart made it to the floor from the oil pan, before I knocked over another quart that was waiting for me, while I ran to put the plug back in. I also managed to put some brand new oil on the side of my newly painted engine block.

I also managed to get coolant in without any leaks and put a “new” valve on the heater valve so I can control the heater during the summer.

Yay. Oh, and after 7 months of sitting my carbs leak gas since I forget to tighten the bowl covers.

Onward and outward, or something like that. Hopefully tomorrow will bring more luck and a started engine.

Parts

Alright, I finally got everything I need to rebuild the heater valve and my new radiator hose finally came in. Hopefully with another hour or two of work (which means 8 hours) I should be able to attempt to start the car. Then I just need to go through the 4 hours of tuning to get the carbs running right again, bleed the brakes since I removed the hoses and I should be set.

I can't wait to get her out on the road again. We've been having BEAUTIFUL weather with some cloudy days in between, but still, perfect cruising weather without a top.

Still re-building

Ok, got the radiator shroud and radiator in. Also installed the distributor, alternator, cooling pump, and began installing the oil pan. Turns out the engine has to be lifted or the suspension has to be dropped to install it. Yay. I’m going to remove the motor mounts and push the engine up an inch or two to get the last oil pan bolts in sometime in the next few days.

I also managed to shear off the plug that covers some hole just below the engine on the bell-housing plate. I was told on MGE that it’s for the automatic transmission that doesn’t really exist anymore. One of the guys was nice enough to offer to send me an extra one he has laying around if I paid shipping.

Hopefully I can get the oil pan finished, install the exhaust, and carbs. Then all I have to do is bleed the brakes, put the tires back on, re-lube the car, fill up the coolant and start her up. Can’t wait to drive her again. Hopefully before I have to go back to work Thursday too.

Almost

So, got everything re-attached except for the heater valve and lower radiator hose. I ended up having to lift the engine up a few inches to properly get the oil pan re-attached and lucky me, I discovered the driver's side engine mount is completely sheered off. I'll need to order a new one soon, but since it's been broken for some time I'm not too worried about it for the time being.

I'm still waiting for a replacement hose from TheBHive and I need to fix/modify my old heater valve. I have all the parts I just need another tap to put the threats in the valve housing after I cut it in half.

Delayed

Somewhat delayed on putting the B back together. Mother-In-Law wants to go to L.L. Bean to shop (over an hour away), so my plans are pretty much shot. Got a grill-out tomorrow so I won’t be able to put as much as I want together.

The painting came out awesome though and I hope to have pictures soon. I keep forgetting my camera when I go to the garage. I opted for a silver and black engine coloring. Now I just need a can of yellow so I can repaint the cooling fan since everything else is going to be shiny new looking.
